MICHELE CHONG |
Ex-Boxer/Actor Tom Sizemore Helps the Kids
Story and photos by Michele Chong
Film actor and former boxer
Tom Sizemore continues to turn over a new leaf by volunteering his time to
help out others like the hundreds of at-risk kids who joined the thespian
at the Inner-City Games Los Angeles (ICGLA) and the Hollenbeck Youth
Center’s “Family Dodger Night” at Elysian Park held earlier this week.
If the bright lights of Tinseltown hadn’t called his name, the husky actor
might have found fame and fortune inside the boxing ring. Before actor Tom
Sizemore’s mug became recognizable from his long list of film and TV
credits, he was an up-and-coming young boxer who fought out of the
legendary Kronk Gym in Detroit.

STATEMENT FROM THE
JOHN ARUM FAMILY |
The family of John Arum would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to
everyone who has shared their concern with us during this tragic time.
John was a very special person. A wonderful husband, son, brother and
friend, John meant so much, to so many. He was so loved and we miss him
already.
First, we would like to thank the National Park Service, Chelan Mountain
Rescue, Stehekin Community and the King County Sheriff’s Office for its
tireless efforts in conducting aerial and ground searches over steep and
difficult terrain throughout the week. They refused to give up on their
search for John despite the conditions and they were a constant source of
comfort and information to us. Their dedication to their mission was
awe-inspiring and we will remember them for that forever.
And to everyone from around the world who has reached out to us with
prayers and messages of support, please know you have helped sustain us
during this most difficult time. You have touched our souls.
Thank you again.
Love,
The Arum Family
KIMBO SLICE IS GOING TO
BOX??
by Chris Strait
Ok, this news came to me last week... that former
street-fighting stand-out, and MMA flop Kimbo Slice (aka Kevin Ferguson)
has signed with a major boxing promoter (aka Gary Shaw). So, now he will
begin his career as a boxer. This will happen in his mid/late 30's, of
course, which doesn't make him that much older than most contenders. If
this is merely a publicity stunt, we all know what is going to happen.

la empresa Promociones del Pueblo que son de ciudad Juárez pero como la
violencia esta al pie del día nos les queda otra que buscar nuevas

A search team in a helicopter in North Cascades National Park outside of
Seattle located the body of John Arum, the eldest son of Top Rank boxing
promoter Bob Arum, on Friday.
John Arum's body was discovered at approximately 4:30 p.m. PT at the
7,700-foot level of the north face of Storm King Mountain, which rises
8,815 feet, according to Kerry Olson, public information officer for the
park.
Olson said Arum's body was discovered about 300 feet below where his
backpack had been found on Thursday.
"We don't know where he was on the mountain when he fell, but we know it
was at least a 300-foot fall, but we don't know how far he fell," Olson
said.
Arum, an experienced hiker, was 49. The search began on Monday after he
failed to return from the hiking trip. He was hiking alone.
According to family members, Arum's goal was to reach the summit of the
100 highest peaks in Washington state. He had hiked more than 80 at the
time of his death on the mountain about 85 miles northeast of Seattle.
Olson said Arum's body has not been retrieved.
"It's a very steep location and unstable with loose rock," Olson said.
"It's an area where we can't rappel down to it or climb up to it. We are
working on a recovery plan and reaching out to see if we can get some help
to bring his body back to his family."
Olson said the aerial search began on Wednesday when rainy and cloudy
weather cleared.
"His body was in an area that had previously been covered with snow," she
said. "[Friday] we had very warm weather and the snow melted and he was
visible from an aerial search."
Bob Arum, along with other family members, were notified in person shortly
after the discovery, Olson said. She said the family had been staying at a
compound where the search was being co-coordinated in the park.
Our prayers are with Bob and the entire Arum Family.

Friday night in the Crown Theater at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Cruiserweight Henry Namauu continued his KO streak with a 7th round TKO
over a game Chad Davis. Davis floored Namauu in round three but Namauu
stormed right back bombarding Davis with many unanswered punches for the
next 4 rounds finally causing referee Tony Weeks to call a halt to the
bout.

The fight of the night was a 4 round toe to toe battle between 2 Las Vegas
girls, Crystal Hoy (R) and Mandy LaPointe (L) shown with Crown Boxing's
matchmaker Frank Luca and referee Tony Weeks. These girls had the crowd
standing and cheering from the opening salvo and it never stopped. As soon
as the results were read the crowd immediately started screaming for a
rematch.
These girls showed what a properly matched up women's fight can be.

Rant shows Mayweather out of control
By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports
No one should have been surprised by the
hateful, racist, vitriolic rant that Floyd Mayweather Jr. released
Thursday on a video-sharing site in which he went into an angry tirade
against Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather referred to Pacquiao as a “yellow chump,” “a midget” and said
“Once I stomp the midget, I’ll make that (expletive) make me a sushi roll
and cook me some rice,” in a hard-to-watch video he apparently recorded
live on uStream.com on Thursday. He also alluded to his belief that
Pacquiao uses performance-enhancing drugs, noting the fight will occur
when Pacquiao quits, as he calls it, taking “them power pellets.”

LUNDY REAFFIRMS FREE
AGENT STATUS |
Fresh off his dominant unanimous decision victory over
Omri Lowther on just four days notice, highly regarded Lightweight
“Hammerin” Hank Lundy wants the world to know that despite an appearance
of promoter Jimmy Burchfield at the fight, that Lundy is a promotional
free agent.
A week ago Wednesday in Federal Court in Philadelphia, Lundy was granted
his contractual release. Lundy then was able to secure the fight in
Montreal with the help of Brian Cohen, who is the son of Lundy’s manager,
Ivan Cohen.
“Burchfield knows that what we have is a standing release from him. “,
said Ivan Cohen
“In fact it was my son Brian who made the fight in Montreal and Burchfield
somehow wound up with the money Brian should have received for making that
fight. This is just another indication of how this man works and what we
have been saying for the past month is the real truth.”
“What Hank did the other night show’s what kind of fighter he is. He took
a fight on four days’ notice. We jumped on a plane to Montreal and won
every round against a quality fighter. With everything that has been going
around him, starting with the loss to Molina and now this contract
situation, he showed true professionalism and we feel that the loss to
Molina is just a blip on the radar and we will be back knocking on the
door of a world title real soon.”

WOMEN'S
BOXING... WILL OLYMPICS HELP??
by Chris Strait
With the
announcement that the 2012 London Olympics will include women's boxing,
the first sarcastic reaction I had was, "great, now that amateur boxing is
over for U.S. men, they're going to invite women to the party." I'm sure
the ladies appreciate being included in this sinking ship.
